Women in the Canadian Forces
Profiles in Courage
Maj. D.M. (Dee) Brasseur and Cap. Jane Foster were the first female fighter pilots IN THE WORLD.
Maj Colton is the first Canadian woman to achieve 5,000 flying hours on the CC-130 Hercules and is the most senior female pilot flying today in the Canadian Forces. She has currently logged 6,900 flying hours.
Maj Colton joined the Canadian Forces as a pilot in March 1980 two weeks after they opened up the trade to women. She received her pilot wings in June 1982 and was posted to Trenton to fly the CC-130 Hercules.
Maj Colton has served with every Hercules Squadron in Canada with the exception of 413 Squadron in Greenwood NS. She has also traveled the world participating in many missions but has spent the majority of her military career searching middle and Eastern-Ontario for missing persons, aircraft and boats.
Throughout her military career, Maj Colton has been a role model for other women in the Canadian Forces. She has also been an active member of the Air Force Speakers Bureau, speaking to students, service clubs and community organizations about her many experiences.
In 2006, Maj Colton had the honour of having her log book signed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the occasion of reaching her 6,000th flying hour, who she happened to be flying to Nunavut at the time.
Maj Colton is currently the Deputy Flight Commander for Conversion training flight which teaches newly winged graduates on the Hercules and she also augments the local Search and Rescue Squadron.
She is married to a retired military pilot and they have one daughter who attends McMaster University’s Engineering program.
